MARK DOREMUS
I am Mark Doremus, I have lived in Bakersfield for over 3 decades. My wife, Sue Sonski and I bought 50 acres and built a house and, through the years, I have added a garage and numerous out-buildings. I raise sheep and the barn is where I put the moms and lambs in the spring. I use the land to grow hay for the sheep and my wife and I have always had a vegetable garden.
I worked as a machinist most of my life repairing or building anything, all in metal. In the last 5-8 years I have worked with or around CNC mills making metal parts and this is when I saw the possibility to use the same skills to carve wood pictures and signs. I figured this would be a great retirement occupation.
I start with taking a picture that I want to transform into a 3D carving with good contrast and use the software that creates the 3D image in the computer. This allows me to “mold” or create a 3 dimensional model in the computer and then generate the program to run the CNC router that carves the image that you see.
My next endeavor is to learn how to make a complete 3D image using a similar, but more complicated process, but that is the thrill of learning.
This is my “winter project”, because I have a vegetable garden that I have been growing since we bought the land. And then, of course I have to cut hay for my sheep, and everything else that needs to be done outside.
But as I get better on my router I will still be making whatever I can portray.
